Seal & Coastal Cruises

Sealwatch Special

Seal and Coastal CruisesThe Seal Express is a purpose-built, 32-feet, jet-driven vessel that will take you on a two-hour trip to see some of the most picturesque scenery Pembrokeshire has to offer.

It all starts in the small former coal mining / fishing village of Saundersfoot and heads around the coastline to the stunning view of Tenby from the north side, with Goscar Rock, Castle Hill and St Catherine’s Island, before you go across the waterway to the monastic island of Caldey. Here, you will visit the Atlantic Grey seals that inhabit the north end of the island and can quite often be seen basking on the rocks. There are some 80 pairs of seals that can be seen in the waters around Caldey, and they share this beautiful habitat with an array of seabirds, including gulls and oystercatchers.

As the trip takes you around the island you will notice the terrain changes colour, from the cold grey limestone to the warm-looking sandstone and, on top of these tall, sheer cliffs visitors can see the towering lighthouse.

The back of the island is open to the Atlantic Ocean and can be very dramatic, even on calm days, and this is all part of its beauty. You will eventually come around to the other island of St Margaret’s, a renowned bird sanctuary, where the terrain returns to the grey limestone. The island’s population increases during June and July, with migratory birds visiting and then departing during August, leaving behind the permanent residents, including the common gulls, cormorants and shags.

Throughout the trip the coastline around you is quite spectacular, and on the journey back you navigate the Caldey Sound, going along the South Beach of Tenby, returning to St Catherine’s Island, then on home to Saundersfoot.
